A couple is ready to go to an art opening. After a fight the wife, Sue walks out taking with her an architectural magazine.
In his office Mark is faced with more problems with a building design. He quickly fixes the problem.
In his rivals house David tries to convince Carla that her boss Mark is over the hill. Carla confronts David with her knowledge that he is having an affair with Mark's wife Sue. He tells her that it is important for his career.
Mark meets with his friend and tells him that he still hasn't heard about the architectural competition, which would solve all his work problems. He mentions his problems with Sue. His friend just tells him that she gave up being an artist for him, so give her some space. Meanwhile Sue and David are making love. When she goes to the bathroom, he finds Marks letter hidden in her architectural magazine. He takes the letter and hides it. When she returns he playfully takes her wedding ring. When Sue returns home, Mark tries to apologize to Sue. She walks away. Later that night, Carla arrives with work. She seems distracted. She shows him the photo of David and Sue. Later Mark walks into their bedroom and notices that Sue's ring is missing.
David and Sue have dinner. They are getting closer. Mark goes to a jeweler. That night, Sue and Mark trade words. He tries to make amends by giving her a diamond necklace. She drops it on the floor without looking at it.
The next day Mark has an important meeting. He is surprised when David joins the meeting. Mark begins his presentation. David says that the design is old and outdated. He suggests cuts in the design for higher profits. Mark objects but his work ethic is questioned.
Sue comes to Marks office as their daughter is in trouble at school. Things get heated and Mark confronts Sue with the affair. He asks her try, she says it's too late. At the school, the head of the school threatens to expel their daughter. Mark argues that there isn't any evidence that their daughter took drugs. Back at work Mark looses his job. He gets home and Sue has taken all of the furniture. The house is empty except for an envelope with her wedding ring. Sue is at David's and is guilty about her decision.
Later that day Carla makes the bed and finds the letter that David has hidden. She calls Mark and meets him at the pier where Sue and David are also meeting. Carla confronts David with the letter. Sue reads the letter saying that Mark has won the competition. David can say nothing. Mark and David wrestle in the ocean. Sue and Mark walk off together.
